Our Mission Statement identifies our reason for existing and declares what our parents and our students should expect from us; it conveys our vision of what we want to be: Notre MissionToronto French School est une école indépendante bilingue, mixte et non confessionnelle. MissionToronto French School is a bilingual, co-educational and non-denominational independent school for students from pre-kindergarten to university entrance. We ensure high educational standards and a Canadian and international perspective. In our caring and supportive learning environment, we enable and encourage students of diverse backgrounds to discover and develop their intellectual, physical and creative potential. We demonstrate our commitment to the development of the whole child through stimulating academic and co-curricular programs. We prepare our students for the future. HistoryIt all began in a basement. Harry Giles, a lawyer, and his wife, Anna, a psychologist with the Toronto Board of Education, wanted their children to have a bilingual education. In 1962, they opened their home to six students and one teacher and Toronto French School was created. Over the years, the Giles, pioneers in the field of bilingual education, found dedicated staff from around the world to fulfill their dream. As the school grew, campuses were established in rental facilities throughout Toronto. By 1966, there were five locations in Toronto, and a new rental facility in Mississauga (1293 Meredith Ave). In 1971, Premier Bill Davis officially opened the branch at 101 Mildenhall Rd. In 1981, the branch at 318 Lawrence Ave. East was acquired and opened. In 1984, all of the Toronto French School locations in Toronto were consolidated in one campus at 296 and 306 Lawrence Avenue East. In 1992, the School purchased 294 Lawrence Ave. East, and in 1995, a permanent home was purchased for the Mississauga campus. Many improvements to the buildings were made over the years. In 1986, new Science labs and Music, Drama, Art and multipurpose rooms were added to 318 Lawrence Ave. East. In 2003, an ambitious $26 million campus redevelopment project was completed at both the Toronto and Mississauga campuses, increasing to almost 22,297 sq. meters the total amount of space devoted to teaching and learning. In its history of over 45 years, the School has grown into one of Canada’s most prestigious independent schools. Ranging from PK-University Entrance, TFS now has over 1200 students. |
