GRADE 1 & INTRO GRADE 1 (CP)

Aims & Objectives
The Grade 1 and Intro Grade 1 programs focus on integrating the children into elementary school by practicing basic learning skills (reading, writing, mathematics). These skills were introduced in Senior Kindergarten and are continued through Grade 2.

Grade 1 is conducted entirely in French (with some gradual exposure to English). It is open to children from both Senior Kindergarten and Intro Senior Kindergarten of TFS, as well as to those whose prerequisites satisfy the requirements. Students in Intro Grade 1 are new to the School. From September to December, an intensive program gives them a solid French language base, and sets the individual approaches and strategies they need in order to succeed. From the end of the first semester on, the program runs parallel to that of the regular Grade 1.

Program

French
As a continuation of the Senior Kindergarten year, French instruction is geared to mastering oral and written language skills. Students build on what they know and develop increased competency in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Learning to read, a skill linked to comprehension of both word meaning and sentence structure, is unquestionably one of the most important goals at the Grade 1 level.

English
A preliminary introduction to the English Program begins in Grade 1. Through drama, poetry, storytelling, discussion and story writing, children are exposed to the written word and increase their oral vocabulary in preparation for Grade 2.

Mathematics
Students explore numbers, learn to count to 100 and compute addition facts. They discover spatial organization as well as basic two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes. Solving problems and measurement are also important components of the math program.

Science and Technology
Students explore their environment and learn more about the scientific method. They are encouraged to hypothesize experiment outcomes and test the results. Students (in Toronto) also use the ravine for
environmental studies.

Information Technology and Communication
Students begin to use the computer as a tool that allows them to approach writing in a different way. They are introduced to the keyboard and to the use of word processing and graphic design.

History and Geography
Students develop a sense of temporal and spatial organization and are provided with the clear and simple vocabulary needed for placing people and events in time and place. They also gain awareness of the concept of the past.

Education in Civic Responsibility
Students are made aware of the fundamental rules of society and are taught Canada’s national symbols.

Physical Education
As a continuation of Senior Kindergarten, students learn more about the human body and its capabilities. They interact with others in situations designed to stimulate interest, with the aid of a variety of support materials. Students also benefit from an 8-week ice-skating program that allows them to build on what they have learned in Senior Kindergarten.

Art Program
As a follow-up to what they have been taught at the Kindergarten level, children are exposed to new sensory discoveries and further develop their creative imagination and sensitivity. They also have the opportunity to use a wide variety of artistic techniques.

Musical Activities
Students strengthen their vocal ability and learn the rudiments of musical notation and sight-reading. They learn ensemble skills in groups with Orff percussion instruments.
