Assessment | Print |

Assessment procedures vary according to the grade for which the candidate is applying. For students applying to our Introductory Programs, all  will be written in English. French is not required for the Introductory programs (JK - Grade 7). Please note that all standardized aptitude tests are administered in English. However, special arrangements can be made for francophone students who do not speak English.

Jardin d’éveil (age 2)
There is no screening required for Jardin d’éveil and applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. New applications for siblings of children currently enrolled in the school are given priority in terms of space availability. The same applies to children of alumni.

Children who enrol in Jardin d’éveil and want to continue at TFS will have to apply for PK and will be assessed in the same way we assess new prospective PK students. Moving up to PK is not guaranteed; however, Jardin d’éveil students will have priority as returning students.
Please note: Applicants for Jardin d’éveil must be two years old by December 31, 2010.

Pre-Kindergarten, Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten
Beginning in November 2009, candidates are assessed through an individual standardized aptitude test of approximately 45-75 minutes (45 minutes for PK, 1 hour for JK and 1 hour and 15 minutes for SK) during which time we closely monitor the following: language and reasoning skills, concentration, and maturity. All children must be toilet-trained by the time they start school in September 2010.

Screenings for JK and SK candidates for September 2010 will be scheduled from October 26 to December 4, 2009.

Screenings for Pre-Kindergarten candidates for September 2010 will be scheduled from January 4 to February 12, 2010.

Please note: Applicants for Pre-Kindergarten must be three years old by December 31, 2010.

Grades 1 and 2
A group testing session takes place on the morning of Saturday, January 9, 2010 where the children work on a standardized, visual aptitude test. The full morning includes a snack break as well as a gym session and other various activities, which allow us to observe the children in both work and play situations.

Candidates who speak French will be invited back for a separate French assessment.

Children who apply after the January test date will be assessed individually or in small groups based on space availability. Generally, these sessions are organized in two sittings of up to 1.5 hours each either on the same day or over two consecutive days.

Grades 3, 4 and 5
Assessment includes a standardized aptitude test as well as subject testing in English, Math and (when applicable) French. At this level, the testing process usually takes between 3 and 4 hours.

Candidates for Grades 3 and 4 are tested individually or in small groups beginning in January. Grade Five candidates are assessed in a group testing session on Saturday, January 23, 2010. Candidates who apply after this test date are assessed individually or in small groups based on availability.

Grades 6 to Level V (end of secondary school)
Assessment includes a standardized aptitude test as well as subject testing in English, Math and (when applicable) French. At this level, the testing process usually takes between 3 and 4 hours.

A group testing session for subject tests takes place on Saturday, January 23, 2010. Candidates who apply after this test date may be assessed individually or in small groups based on space availability.

Please note that because our elementary school program is covered in seven years, we do not offer Grade 8. The last point of entry, therefore, for the Introductory Program is Grade 7.
