Building Leaders and Friends at Camp Kanawana

From June 8th through the 12th, the Grade 7 students from the Mississauga and Toronto campuses found out what it meant to let go of the distracting accessories of modern life and rely on each other’s company instead. No cell phones, hair dryers, internet access or TV. In their place, were the pristine waters, thick fir forests and clean air of Camp Kanawana, located on 223 hectares 45 minutes northwest of Montreal.

Upon arrival at the Camp, the students were separated into groups and led through a primer on the natural area and on the ecological aspects of the Camp. Operating in an environmentally-conscious manner that respects its natural environment, Camp Kanawana conserves and recycles water, allows only biodegradable products to be used, and derives most of its energy through solar power and wood-burning stoves.

Focusing on leadership, respect for nature and creativity, the following days at the Camp were filled with activities. The students took turns climbing, canoeing and kayaking, and discovering archery, which proved to be very popular! They also learned how to carve soap stone, engaged in water games, and explored the mysteries of the forest. After dinner, in addition to a nightly Soirée Cabaret, the students sat around a massive camp fire listening to traditional legends and dancing.

And how did the students fare without all those modern conveniences? According to Judith Gorry, Vice Principal at the Senior School, “they loved it, even swimming in the cold water!”
