Celebrating Graduation with the Class of 2010
On May 28th, 61 Level V students, dressed for the occasion in their royal blue robes, marched past proud family members, teachers and other guests, as they took their place of honour for the 2010 TFS graduation ceremony.
After remarks from Headmaster, Dr. John Godfrey, and Senior School Principal, Heidi Gollert, it was time for the presentation of diplomas and subject awards. As per TFS tradition, though, prior to handing each student their diploma, a staff member read a personal – and affectionate – note, describing the student’s character and noteworthy achievements while at TFS.
Two such accomplishments were the Ontario Scholars award and the Edward A. Tory Award. 95% of the graduates were named as Ontario Scholars, with an average of 80% or above, while 70% were Edward A. Tory winners, with averages of 90% or above.
The university destination of each student was also mentioned. The graduating Class of 2010 will be attending 21 different universities located across Canada, the US and Britain.
After remarks from the Chair of the Board, Lena Sarkissian, this year’s guest speaker, Martha Baillie, Class of ’77, addressed the graduates. Ms. Baillie, a renowned author, was recently recognized as TFS’ second annual Alumni of Distinction. She advised the students to define and measure success on their own terms.
Next, the presentation of the graduation awards took place. A total of 16 different awards were presented. Criteria for each was described, and diverse members of the TFS community comprised the list of presenters, from co-founder Harry Giles and a French consular official, to various family members for those awards that are named after individuals.
Valedictorians Natalie E., daughter of both a TFS alumna and alumnus, and Alexander K. gave a touching speech addressed to their parents, peers and teachers.
Finally, Dr. Godfrey invited everyone to a reception, before a bagpipe player in Scottish dress piped TFS’ newest alumni, staff and all guests out of the gym – a more recent TFS tradition, inaugurated by Dr. Godfrey last year.
Congratulations to Class of 2010 and their families! We look forward to hearing all about your achievements as you enter the next phase of your academic career.
