Honouring Our Planet through Earth Week Activities

During the week of April 18th, students and staff from all branches of TFS celebrated our beautiful planet and endeavoured to keep it a vibrant shade of green.

At 101 Mildenhall, students from SK and Grade 1 viewed films about protecting the planet and were asked, with their classmates, to come up with a commitment to help the environment. Each class presented their environmental commitment and posted it on a wall for all to see.

On April 21st, they held an environmental festival. Led by Michel Shanks of Vaisseau Magique (Magic Suitcase), JK, SK and Grade 1 classes travelled into our ravine in search of puzzle pieces depicting environmental issues. They also watched a film created by class Grade 2A, which portrayed 22 acts to protect the earth.

The day marked earth-themed activities at 296 Lawrence Avenue East, as well.  At their assembly, the Grade 2-5 students created a sea of blue and green, dressed in their Journée Chic (no uniforms) colours for the day. The guest of honour was Isabelle Turcotte Baird, an Olympic athlete who represented Canada in the triathlon at the 2009 Sydney Summer Olympic Games. Now a Clean Air Champion, Ms. Turcotte Baird talked about actions that the students could take to improve air quality for everyone.

At the Senior School, students, teachers and other staff turned off the lights for an hour and worked under nature’s light instead.
In Mississauga, all students were asked to bring a waste-free lunch for Earth Week, to make parents and students aware just how much packaging goes into their lunches, and to get everyone thinking about the environmental costs of production, transportation and recycling.

The Mississauga Grade 4 and 5 classes also planted bulbs around the outdoor Student Common, while SK to Grade 3 students cleaned neighbourhood streets and nearby Searson Park of garbage.

While Earth Week is only one week, TFS is determined to make it a year ‘round event, through our upcoming EcoSchool certification. Stay tuned for more details!
