Junior School Students Know Some Homes are for the Birds

During the first week after March Break, Grade 1 students at the Junior School learned not only that birds need homes, but they also built them some as well.

Led in French by Michel from UCanDoIt!, a travelling woodworking program, the students were instructed in the basics of building, construction safety and carpentry techniques. The workshop complemented themes currently being studied by the Grade 1 students, including the concepts of home and habitat.

Each student had to precisely follow the instructions Michel set out, and step-by-step, they built their own birdhouse using hammers, nails and a woodworking grip to put the pieces together. Michel and the students discussed how the round openings were actually the doors to the birds’ homes, and that these homes would be used for the birds to nest in.

The birdhouses were designed so that parents could mount them on a backyard tree. They even discussed exactly where on the tree to place the birdhouse, to keep it safe from family members Fido and Fluffy.

So this spring a few lucky Toronto birds will have brand new homes, thanks to the apprentice craftspeople at TFS’ Junior School.
