Senior School Student Scores 100% in Gauss Math Contest For only the third time in TFS history, a Grade 7 student has scored 100% on a math contest! And Justin C. obtained this amazing result after taking the Grade 8 Gauss Math Contest. In total, less than 0.5% of students worldwide who take the test receive a perfect score, according to Christine Kamani, math teacher at the Senior School. In 2008, over 17,000 students took the Grade 8 Gauss Math Contest, representing almost 800 schools. The average score for the Contest was 66%.

Justin started TFS as a Grade 6 intro student, after finding his public school unchallenging. And though he had always been interested in math, it was the Kangaroo Math Contest he took while in Grade 6 that really got him into the subject. The Kangaroo originated in France in 1991, and has since gone international with 41 countries participating.

Encouraged by his math teacher, Justin decided to take on the Gauss this year, practicing for the test every three days for a two week period. After so much practice, Justin felt “pretty confident” about the actual test, but afterwards “I wasn’t too sure about one of the questions.” He shouldn’t have worried.

Upon hearing the results, he modestly declared his score “a good achievement.” But as Ms. Kamani said, and the rest of TFS would agree, “We are all really proud of his success!”
