Students Become MADly Creative at Senior School's Arts Fest

It was all about Music! Art! Drama! – otherwise known as MAD Night – at the Senior School on May 18th. Artistic displays that evening began almost as soon as parents, students and staff walked into the entrance area of the Senior School. The wide-screen TV mounted outside the Guidance Department played a selection from the Level III’s very first Film Fest. The Film Fest saw teams of students script, act and direct an original film based on a work of literature. Students had voted for their favourites, and the top six were screened during MAD Night.

In the Student Common, visual art by students in Grade 6 through Level IV hung on the walls and on portable screens. Artworks included a Grade 7 collection where students had affixed photos of themselves into an existing background, then rendered a new painting based on the original. Level I students drew or painted an interior from their home or of the School, while Level II’s displayed their interpretation of Op Art. Using books, Level III students created amazing paper sculptures. And as IB art students, the Level IV’s exhibited works from their individual portfolios, based on the themes of collections and obsessions.

Audiences in the Dance Studio were treated to dramatic arts from students in Grade 6 through Level III. One remarkable monologue was performed by Grade 7 student Katie A., in the role of Agave from the Greek tragedy The Bacchae by Euripides. In fact, Katie won second place for this performance at the early May Ontario Student Classics Conference held at Brock University.

Not to be missed were the many music recitals performed by a veritable army of TFS student musicians! Under the direction of music teachers David Arnot-Johnston and Rupert Price, there were performances by the Jazz, Wind and String Ensembles as well as TFS’ Chamber Singers. The Grade 6/7 Ensemble, with percussion, keyboards, guitar and vocal soloists, was conducted by drama teacher Doug Doughty.
Congratulations to all student participants and their very supportive teachers and staff!
