TFS Students Know How to EatSmart
Pointing the way to a healthy lifestyle is a key educational component at the Senior School. Both in class and out, students are coached to reflect on and make good lifestyle decisions, and that includes what they choose to eat.
Recently, for the third year in a row, La Terrasse – the Senior School’s cafeteria and the location of the Toronto campus’ food service provider – was awarded the coveted EatSmart designation by Toronto Public Health.
To mark the occasion, two third-year nursing students from Ryerson University, who do a placement for a term at the Senior School as their community health practicum, conducted an EatSmart challenge, asking students to test their knowledge of healthy eating. The interactive approach created much interest among the lunch-time student crowd!
Underscoring the lesson of healthy eating are the many healthy choices available daily at La Terrasse. The seasonal café menu, which is posted both on Communiqué and First Class, highlights one entree each day as the EatSmart choice. Students are also directed into making better choices in other ways. “Though junk food is a fact of life, we try to guide students – not push them – towards healthy eating. For instance we rarely use white bread. So if only whole wheat is available, that’s what they choose,” said Ann Kowalski, Aramark’s food service manager in charge of TFS.
Expanding on this philosophy, a new program offering healthy snacks to Grade 6 & 7 students at the Senior School during the morning recess was recently launched. Those students who sign up for the program can pick up their fresh snacks from La Terrasse at their break.
