Year-end Assemblies Celebrate All Forms of Athletic Success

At two assemblies held on June 1st, Junior and Senior School students, involved in competitive sports at TFS from Grade 4 to Level V, were acknowledged for their dedication, efforts and success. No matter the sport, each team was recognized with three awards: Most Valuable Player, Most Sportsmanlike Player and Most Improved Player.

At the Grade 4 to Level I assembly, each of the three seasons was thoroughly recapped. Fall highlights included TFS’ Junior Cross-country team, who, yet again, were the CISAA Overall Co-ed Champions!
The winter session was notable for the inauguration of TFS’s first competitive hockey team. According to the coaches – Marty Welch, Patrick Pellisou, Gilles Galipeau and Michael Burke – the Boys Under 12 team “improved over the year...and everyone is looking forward to next year and growing the program in the years to come.”

Other highlights included the Boys Under 14 Basketball team, who went undefeated in the regular season and on average beat their rivals by 20 points, and the Artistic, Rhythmic and Aerobic Gymnastics teams, who saw  tremendous success as a group and individually.

Springtime was primetime for the Junior Track and Field team, who found out only on the morning of the assembly that they were once again the Junior Co-ed Overall Champions, beating their closest competitor by 46 points.

The closing of the Grade 4 to Level I assembly saw all athletes who had participated on one competitive team in each of the three terms receive a Rising Star award, and then the Junior Athletes of the Year were announced:  Zachary S. and Chloe H.

The Level II-V assembly was just as enthusiastically recollected. Fall highlights involved the Junior Girls Basketball team - and CISAA Champions – who were lucky enough to have two superstar players. “Penny D. and Robyn P. showed amazing leadership, great skill and they made everyone around them better,” said coach Michael Dmitrik. Also of note was the Girls Swim team, with participants ranging from Grade 5 to Level V; in fact, so many students tried out for the team that, for the first time, they had to make cuts.

Also announced were the recipients of the Ivar Lussep Award, for athleticism, leadership and sportsmanship, who had first been recognized at the Class of 2010 graduation. The two awards went to former Athletic Prefects Timothy S. and Jessica C.

New this past winter were the Co-ed Curling Club and the Senior Co-ed Squash team. Both enjoyed their first season, which saw members of our squash team playing against schools that not only have their own courts, but have had squash teams in place since as early as the 1920s!

The recent winners of The S.W. Karrys Family Scholarship, for academic achievement, intellectual curiosity and outstanding performance in sports, were also noted: Philip J.-S. and Jeremie H., from the Class of 2010.

The Senior Co-ed Ultimate Frisbee team was one of spring’s sporting notables, as it was the first year this team was a member of the CISAA Ultimate Frisbee league and they won the Division II Championship on our own home field! Another intrepid team was Senior Track and Field, who, despite their small numbers (five), managed to have three members qualify for the GTA Metro Championship and two qualify for OFSAA.

Like the assembly for the younger students, the senior assembly also awarded its Rising Stars before announcing that the Senior Athletes of the Year are Marc M. and Robyn P.

Congratulations to all participants, award winners and coaches, for another amazing year in sports at TFS!
