Senior School Students Take Spirit Week to Olympic Heights

2010’s Senior School Spirit Week had certain frosty – and heroic – qualities to its many competitions and events. You could even say their inspiration was positively Olympian, as from February 8th through the 11th, the Senior School brought Vancouver to life, with a deluge of events that evoked the Games in name, if not in execution. As well, for the first time, each of the four days was a themed casual day, adding considerable creativity to the already energized week.

The opening activity was truly a special event, organized and partially funded by the Student Council. All students from Grade 6 to Level V, in their house groups and as a whole, took part in an interactive team-building program run by the Drum Cafe, an organization that helped the students become one, powerful drumming team. Talk about starting off with a bang!

This was followed by Frozen Frenzy and Bobsledding. Frozen Frenzy involved students working in partnership to unfold frozen house tee-shirts and put them on. Said Kim English, Dean of Student Affairs, “They demonstrated quite unusual creativity when trying to thaw their shirts!”

Tuesday involved an Olympic Trivia competition and a game of Capture the Torch, aka Capture the Flag, while Wednesday saw an Olympians Lunch and Snowball Fight. The Olympians Lunch proved to be a huge hit. As the student audience looked on, while munching on snow-cones, teams from each house faced off to win a Jell-O-eating competition. The team which first finished off the most trays of Jell-O was declared the winner.

On Thursday, the last day of Spirit Week, the closing ceremonies took place and the winning houses were announced: in first place, Volk, followed by Giles in second and Campbell in third.

Remarked Head Girl and Houses Prefect, Jessica S., “The theme was a lot more evident this year, and I think this really brought the week together!”
