Dr. Christopher Chan '89, Alumni of Distinction 2023

An alumnus and a parent of two TFS graduates, Dr. Christopher Chan ‘89 is a decorated physician, award-winning researcher and professor. 
As a leader in many spheres of healthcare he has made important contributions to the world of medicine and medical practice that have transformed lives and continue to influence medical practices around the globe. Today, Christopher is a practicing nephrologist at Toronto’s University Health Network (UHN), a researcher focused on home hemodialysis, and a leader in healthcare. 

Christopher’s many contributions include pioneering an innovative approach to dialysis which is improving the lives of kidney disease sufferers around the world, helping develop a new approach to delivering hospital services and supporting international knowledge sharing. He is also a leader in many areas of UHN, including the positions of Director of Nephrology and Professor of Medicine, Deputy Physician in Chief of Economics and Medical Lead at UHN Connected Care, an innovative project which aims to redefine how UHN patients receive care by making more services accessible from home. In addition, Christopher is President of the International Society for Hemodialysis, which promotes international knowledge-sharing.  

Christopher, who was passionate about science and chemistry while a student at TFS, credits the school’s rigorous academic program and support for students for empowering him to succeed. He holds a Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Toronto and has completed additional training in cardiovascular physiology. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and has written multiple book chapters on the topic of home dialysis. His work on improving the treatment of kidney disease has received multiple awards, including the Temetry Faculty of Medicine 2020 Dean’s Alumni Award.
