Assessment

Procedures vary according to the grade for which the child is applying. For most students who are applying with little or no prior knowledge of French, all assessments are done in English. French is not required for entry up to and including Grade 7 (subject to availability), the last year during which the Introductory Program is offered. Francophone students who do not speak English will be tested in French. Bilingual students will be tested in their language of choice.

Students who speak French will undergo a separate French assessment at the time of their interview.

  • Jardin d’éveil (age 2)

    A "Get To Know You" session for parents and children will be held in the morning of Saturday, January 18, 2020. There will be various age-appropriate play activities for children as well as a brief interview with parents.

    Children in Jardin d’éveil will move to PK the following year on the recommendation from the principal. There is no application necessary for PK.

    Please note: Applicants for entry into Jardin d’éveil in September 2020 must be two years old by December 31, 2020.
  • Pre-Kindergarten (age 3)

    A "Get To Know You" session for parents and children will be held on January 21 and January 23, 2020, in the morning. There will be various age-appropriate play activities for children as well as a brief interview with parents.

    Please note: Applicants for entry into PK in September 2020 must be three years old by December 31, 2020.
  • Junior Kindergarten (age 4)

    Toronto campus:
    Candidates and their parents will be invited for a Readiness session on either November 13 or November 14, 2019, in the morning.

    West Campus:
    Candidates and their parents will be invited for a Readiness session on November 23, 2019, in the morning.
  • Senior Kindergarten (age 5) and Grade 1 (age 6)

    The assessment consists of a morning of activities in a group setting called Fun Day, scheduled in the morning of Saturday, November 30, 2019 (Toronto campus) and the morning of Saturday, November 23, 2019 (West Campus).
  • Grades 2 to 5

    The assessment includes a standardized aptitude test, math, English reading and writing and when applicable, reading and writing in French.

    There is also a collaborative group activity in the gymnasium.

    Testing for Junior School candidates for September 2020 will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020 (half-day) by invitation only.
  • Grade 6 to 12 (Level V)

    The assessment includes taking the SSAT as well as a personal interview at TFS (please visit www.ssat.org for SSAT details). Please apply to SSAT directly; when registering for a testing date, indicate you would like results to be sent to TFS - Canada's International School, ID number 7685. Students who speak French will undergo a separate French assessment at the time of their interview. While we do not encourage any special tutoring for the SSAT, we do suggest applicants use the resources available through the SSAT Practice Portal to practise before writing the test.

    Character and personal growth are an integral part of a TFS education. Grades and test scores just don't tell us the whole story of your child. The Character Skills Snapshot gives us richer holistic information and illuminates areas where TFS can help your child grow and thrive.

    The Character Skills Snapshot
    All Grade 6 and above applicants to TFS are required to take the Character Skills Snapshot. For students who take the SSAT, there is no charge to take The Snapshot. Once you register for an SSAT, you will have access to The Snapshot.
