Time to discover India for our Senior School students

Bollywood! Henna! Holi! Our students trip to India was filled with magical colour, cultural traditions service activities. Students learned how to dance Bollywood-style taught by a professional Bollywood dancer. They experienced the seven-centuries-long traditions of tie-dying and henna, and learned about the rich history surrounding the Kumbhalgarh Fort, built in the 15th century.
They also took part in the thrill of Holi, an ancient Hindu festival of colours, when multi-coloured powders, made from curry dyes, are thrown over everyone in a riotous celebration. Another fond memory was being greeting with tikka and mala. Mala are garlands that signify that guests are treated in the same manner as the gods, as flowers are used to honour the gods. The accompanying Hindi phrase is Atiti Devo Bhava – which in English means guests are gods. Tikka is a red powder made from flower petals, which is placed on the forehead to welcome one to the family.
