Slowing down the fast fashion industry
As part of their IB’s MYP (Middle Years Project) Community Project, Level I students attended an assembly about the environmental impact of the fashion industry.
They also took part in workshops run by Fashion Takes Action, a Canadian non-profit organization focused on sustainability, which works with both consumers and corporations to encourage the development of a circular economy.
Working in groups, students used design thinking to try to find concrete solutions to problems surrounding fast fashion, at the local, regional and even global levels. They pitched their ideas to their classmates, who voted for the most viable plans. Some of their innovations included natural dyes, a process to evaporate dye from water, and cotton clothing repurposing in the form of home insulation.
The top five projects were then shared with parents during a showcase evening held on January 26.
