This year, as we mark 35 years of implementing the IB programme at TFS, we’re reminded how this decision continues to shape the experience of every student who walks through our doors. What does the IB journey look like through the eyes of our students? The Grade 5 PYP Exhibition, the Level III MYP Personal Project and the Level IV DP Core are three defining milestones in the IB continuum at TFS. In the accompanying video, students reflect on each experience, discussing the topics they explored, the challenges they overcame and the lessons they learned along the way.

Some of the most memorable educational moments happen when students step beyond what they thought possible.

At TFS, cumulative IB projects – from the Grade 5 PYP Exhibition to the Level III MYP Personal Project and the Level IV DP Core – mark key milestones where students take ownership of their learning. These projects empower students to investigate topics they care about, tackle real-world challenges, and creatively share their findings. Along the way, they build essential skills like critical thinking, time management and problem-solving.

“For my personal project, I explored the effects of colonization on Jamaica through folklore and art. My favourite part was connecting to my roots and learning more about my culture, since I moved away from the Caribbean when I was seven. Even though I found it challenging at times, I kept pushing through because I really love art.”

— Jeanae D., Level III student

These experiences emphasize that the learning process is just as valuable as the final product. Students build resilience, navigate real-world complexities and learn to adapt when things don’t go according to plan.

In the accompanying video, students across the IB continuum share the stories behind their work, including their challenges and advice for peers. The common thread connecting them all is the opportunity to pursue something they genuinely care about. By taking responsibility for their own education, students are prepared to move forward with purpose and open-mindedness.

“My advice for next year’s students is to try and find something that aligns with what you're passionate about and think about what would be of service to your community. That would be a great place to start.”

— Lara C., Level IV student

As TFS celebrates 35 years of the IB, these projects serve as a reminder that true learning goes beyond acquiring knowledge. It is about learning how to learn and gaining the confidence to make a meaningful contribution as citizens of the world.
