Reflecting on Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope

On September 13, the entire TFS community commemorated Terry Fox Day.
The first run of the day, involving all Senior School students, took place in the morning. Thanks to our motivated runners and volunteers, the students succeeded in running a total of 1,676 kilometres together – more than a Toronto-New York roundtrip!

Not to be outdone, our Junior School students took part in their own run in the afternoon, and managed to cover a grand total of 1,923 laps around the Toronto campus, which corresponds to approximately 1,538 kilometres. In contrast, West Campus students did not aim at running as many laps as possible; their objective was for everyone to run or walk for a full 60 minutes, and each of them showed true dedication!

It is indeed important to remember that Terry Fox Day is about more than performance and emulation. These annual runs also encourage us to reflect on Terry Fox’s inspiring journey and the cause he supported. In that regard, TFS was honoured to host Alexandra Fox, Terry’s niece, who spoke with great eloquence to our Senior School students. She recounted her uncle’s journey throughout Canada and reminded students of the thousands of people who have survived cancer as a result of advances in research. Terry Fox may not have completed his Marathon of Hope, but he has become a national hero and a model of commitment for our youth.
