Grade 2 students learn about the importance of markets in world cultures

Grade 2 students from our West Campus have been learning about the importance of markets in human culture around the world.
Throughout history, towns and cities have developed around markets, which in themselves served as civic centres. Vibrant markets have tended to strengthen local identity and sense of community. While markets have existed for as long as humans have engaged in trade and cooperation, they have taken on different forms depending on the local context, be it a soug (Arabic), a bazaar (Persia), an agora (Greek), a mercado (Spanish) or a schichang (Mandarin).

Our students recently visited the St. Lawrence Market, which was established in the 19th century. There, they were able to experience first-hand the hustle and bustle of human interaction as they asked various traders a number of questions that they had prepared. Students will now attempt to recreate the atmosphere of the St. Lawrence Market in the school gym by setting up stalls and inviting the different grade levels to engage with this important institution of community life.
