Bijou N.

“It was the first time I felt part of a community where people looked like me and shared similar experiences,” she says. “It became a safe space to talk about life, school, haircare, microaggressions, things I hadn’t had the opportunity to express before.”
Bijou joined TFS in Grade 7 after her family relocated to Etobicoke, following nearly a decade spent between Singapore and Tanzania. Though she arrived without any French, Bijou had studied in English and Mandarin at an international school in Singapore. Encouraged by her parents to keep learning languages, she enrolled in TFS’ Introductory French Program. Bijou elected to study architecture at the University of Waterloo. She credits her guidance counsellor with helping her choose the right program and school. “Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, my guidance counsellor really listened,” she says.
