On September 17, TFS was honoured to receive the visit of Jean-Yves Leconte, one of the French senators representing French citizens living abroad.
M. Leconte awarded the Senate Medal to Rupert Price, TFS music teacher and the conductor of our Junior and Senior ensembles. This comes as a well-deserved recognition of his long-standing commitment to history, including his participation in the commemoration of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, held each year at Toronto’s cenotaph.
At TFS, students are encouraged to develop critical thinking and to adopt an international perspective, so they can become well-informed citizens able to have a positive impact in the world. Remembering and learning from our history is an essential part of this mission.
This vision is carried every day by our faculty, and perfectly exemplified by Rupert Price. The Vimy Ridge ceremony is an opportunity for the French community to express its gratitude to the Canadian soldiers who fought overseas to defend the cause of freedom, at Vimy as well as in other battles. A TFS wind ensemble, conducted by Rupert Price, attends this commemoration and performs the Canadian and French national anthems.
This dedication to history and to the celebration of the friendship between Canada and France has not gone unnoticed. The medal awarded by the French Senate to Mr. Price rewards his commitment as a teacher, a musician, and an engaged citizen.
