TFS parents engage the digital world in a Thrive: Speaker Series
On Thursday, April 9, we were pleased to host a Senior School book study in Evershed as part of the Thrive: Speaker Series. The session focused on Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World by Devorah Heitner, an American author and speaker whose work explores how children and teens develop identity and boundaries while growing up in an increasingly connected digital world.
In November, Devorah spoke with TFS about building a well-wired family through understanding technology, maintaining healthy communication and creating a foundation of trust.
With the conversation led by TFS Social Worker Rachel Pipher, parents gathered to discuss these topics and share their perspectives. The discussion highlighted key themes from the book, including the importance of boundaries and consent in digital spaces, how parents can support their children’s online experiences and what readiness for social media can look like.
Together, participants reflected on practical ways to support children in building healthy communication habits and fostering mutual understanding between parents and their children. The evening provided a valuable opportunity for connection, learning and community dialogue around raising confident, responsible digital citizens.
